Corinthian order

The Corinthian order was the third classical design for architecture and the most ornate. Although this particular column does not exactly follow the style, it seems to me it cannot be classified any other way. The rectangular column is one deviation, and another is it's mix with rustic stonework.

  1. You are right about the elaborately styled Corinthian column being at odds with the rustic stone walls. I assume these are not of ancient origin.

  2. TFG, actually all in this photo was excavated in Pompeii and, although some restoration may have been made, it is all from the time of the Vesuvius eruption.
