I was drawn to the s curve in the road and how the snow dusting outlined the path. Upon viewing the image on my computer it appeared pretty muddy and uninteresting. It did not capture the detail in the trees as I remembered. This lead to experimenting with some plug-ins and, although this may look overly processed, I do like the result.
I find that around this time of the year, B&W conversions often suffer from the "muddy" look that you describe. Sometimes, no amount of fiddling with the colour conversion sliders has any useful effect. I do however like to take an image into Photoshop and to use the Photokit creative plug in effects. Provided that they are judiciously applied, with careful use of opacity and masks they can really bring back a bit of life into an image. It just goes to show how good our eyes and memory really are!
