Spring?

Spring arrived 10 days ago, but here is the view out my back door this morning. What's wrong with this picture?

Frost heave

This parking lot was smooth and nearly new a few months ago, but the action of frost heave has made it lumpy, bumpy and even split by fissures. It makes you realize the power of natural forces and proves that the very cold winter has been hard not only people but also pavement.

Moonset

A moonset is not nearly as showy as a sunset. In fact a moonrise and moonset come and go without much notice. A moonset can happen almost any time of the day (this was shot at 7:29 AM). The apparent light in the sky does not depend on moonlight.

On the other hand, the sun rises and falls, dividing the day into light and dark, and creates transitions in oranges, yellows and reds.

But the moon appears and disappears discreetly.

Tears

More of the same

So it we got 18 inches of snow yesterday... sunny and 16º F today... then a 45º F thaw tomorrow. Crazy.

Update: It was 54º F thaw, not 45º,

Spring tease

Drive into work yesterday morning: -8ºF.
Drive home today: +44ºF.

That's a swing of 52º.

And... snow showers tomorrow!

Fresh snow

As much as I am tired of winter, there is still much to like about seeing sunlight falling on fresh snow.
