Spiral staircases are a common subject for many photos it seems. The twisting lines are almost hypnotic, but am I just stealing the work of the architect? It is a pretty obvious target for the photographer.
This particular stairway, which is really more of a ramp, is in the Vatican museum but it is not being used anymore. The entrance and lobby was expanded and modernized a number of years ago and the traffic now by-passes this feature.
But I could not help myself and took the picture.
It's an interesting point when it comes to photographing artwork, graffiti, architectural features etc as to whether we are just using someone else's designs to make a picture. I think a huge percentage of images fall into that category and I think they are entirely valid. Firstly there is the challenge in producing an image that does justice to the object and presents it 'pictorially' (and you've done a fine job in this image), John. But for me I view all my images as visual documents of where I have been and what I have seen and when I see something beautiful or worthy of merit I want to capture it. Firstly because I want to record it and share it. Secondly because I find images of places like this inspiring and we need sources of inspiration if we are to grow as photographers.
