Across the way

This picture is in keeping with my photo blog style, but is is really a follow-up to yesterday's post.

Shown is the building from which James Earl Ray made the fatal shot. 

The well known picture that is forever seared in my memory is of the scene 180 degrees from the above viewpoint... that of the balcony showing Andrew Young, Jesse Jackson and others pointing across the way toward the location of the perpetrator.

Architecture in B&W

I often think architecture looks best in black and white. A little boost in contrast also helps as does dramatic shapes, angles and reflections, all against a noncompeting sky. But maybe it is just me.

A little shop wedged between its larger neighbors. Almost looks like I photoshopped it in, but that is really what it looks like.

The Treasury

The Treasury on the Plaza started out life as a bank in St. Augustine. It is now an event venue that hosts weddings, but is still an impressive building in downtown and the tallest structure for many miles. The terracotta/orange color is found on many buildings in St. Augustine making the elaborate architecture seem well integrated with the other historic buildings in the area.

Peoplemover

Jacksonville has a downtown transportation system that is pretty unique as far as I know. It is called the Jacksonville Skyway. I has been in operation since 1989 but has been expanded and upgraded several times since then. It has 8 stations, some on both sides of the St. Johns River, and is free to access... no charge to ride.

Of course the photo above does not show the peoplemover, only one of the brightly painted pillars that hold up the elevated monorail. The photo below is a view of the two car train navigating its way through the business district.

Mildly dystopian

I photographed this building last year but then it did not look so dark and moody. The lakefront complex is now mostly completed so I was able to get a closer look. It is actually a quite nice development and I am sure the apartments or condos are expensive, as is everything in Toronto.

Brings back memories

This is not the most interesting photo I have posted, but chancing by this little building brought back memories for me. The curious brink/tile is the same material that my grandfathers home was constructed with. It was a small but comfortable house with the brick painted over in a cream color. I have not seen it in decades but it is still fresh in my mind having spent much time in and around the house.

What happened to America?

Have we become a nation of fear and hate? Can we not extend hope and possibility of a better life to those who suffer? Do we no longer exemplify justice and compassion to the world?

This blog is not intended to be political, but it is difficult to suppress my disappointment and depression.

Goodbye Pizza Hut

Not that I will miss the Hut... pretty ugly building, not the best pizza, and no good gluten-free options for me. Besides, they opened a new "hut" across the parking lot which is just a storefront in a plaza.

This should be the last foggy picture for a while... it is snowing today.

Door and diagonals

My tendency is to like things straight, level and ninety-degree vertical, but there is no question that diagonals can add a lot of interest to a composition. And here the wide angle lens (24mm equivalent) adds to the oblique characteristics making everything in the picture an angle.
