Terra Cotta

Terra Cotta has long been used for architectural details, especially in the hue of burnt orange, but also with glazes to add varied colors. The wide variety of options seems unlimited, both in historic buildings as well as modern. It is relatively inexpensive to produce in quantity and quite lightweight compared to carved stone.

Belond that, the shape and geometry of this image lends itself to the square format that I love.

Econoline Pickup

Pretty nice example of a '60's vehicle that still looks good, although it appears it has been partially restored and painted. But for being 60 years old it does not look bad.

A little play on words... just a tangerine peel.

The Treasury

The Treasury on the Plaza started out life as a bank in St. Augustine. It is now an event venue that hosts weddings, but is still an impressive building in downtown and the tallest structure for many miles. The terracotta/orange color is found on many buildings in St. Augustine making the elaborate architecture seem well integrated with the other historic buildings in the area.

Halloween Photoshop fun

When I shot these spooky looking tree silhouettes it was against a deep blue dusk sky, but I bumped up  the contrast and changed the tint to a Halloween orange. Still it seemed a big moon would be a nice addition so I added a photo from an earlier post. I then added a mask to put the moon behind the trees, added a bit of warm tint to make to make the moon fit the scene, and finally added a subtle glow to the edge. 

This is a deviation to my normal posts. I normally only post images without a lot of manipulation, but it is fun to do play in Photoshop sometimes.

Another bird

 

We planted a bird of paradise in our yard almost two years ago and only have had a few disappointing blossoms that never opened fully before wilting away. I am not sure if this blossom is full yet but it does look quite nice so I thought to grab a shot incase it is in fact at peak.

Orange seed pods

Being I am still pretty new to the Florida climate I sometimes run into a plant that strikes me as unusual. Doing a bit of research, courtesy of Google, the plant seems to be Coontie Cycad Zamia and it is poisonous. It is interesting that I found it outside our local hospital. I guess incase you ingest the seeds, at least medical help it is closeby.

Orange mulch

Not sure why anyone would pick bright orange for mulch around trees. I does not look natural to me. How do they achive that color? It especially contrasts with the bright wet spring green grass.

Orange Christmas tree

Two posts in a row with "orange" in the title... strange.

This "christmas-like" tree struck me as curious because of it's orangish hue, but I am sure it is totally normal for its variety. I has many small cones or seed pods (click for a closer look). It is a nice color contrast to the more normally hued evergreens.

Autumn colors in summer

Around here we think of green trees in summer and red/orange/yellow trees in the fall, but that is not always the case. The colorful tree pictured here sprouted autumnal colors right from the start this spring, offering a nice contrast to the more common colored trees that surround it.
